 Central-Phenix City at Opelia | Friday - September 26, 2014 | Non-Region Game
RB/WR #1 Traveon Samuel, Central Phenix City with the winning TD run

OPELIKA, Alabama -- With :56 seconds left in the game, senior Traveon Samuel took the ball from the wildcat position and ran 7-yards to the end zone to lift 7A third-ranked Central-Phenix City to a 28-21 comeback win over 6A third-ranked Opelika at Bulldogs Stadium. Linebacker Toron Morten of Central recovered a Bulldogs fumble with :27 left in the game to close out the win for the Red Devils.

On the last drive, Samuel was the main weapon for the Red Devils and knew that he had one thing in mind on that last play. "I just have to get into the end zone and win this game," said wide receiver/running back Samuel. "We came together as a team, we were down and over came adversity, we knew we had to win."

Last week, Central (6-0) defeated #6 Prattville 42-34 and this week had to come back and defeat #3 Opelika, both games on the road. "I tagged it Cardiac Kids several weeks ago, and these guys just have no quit in them,” Central head coach Jamey Dubose said. “I don’t know how to explain it. I can tell you one thing: This group of kids is as hungry as any group I’ve ever been around to win. This is a special win for our team. Our team finds a way to win everytime. Our motto is do what your supposed to do, do your job, do what we do and we are going to be fine and tonight we did what we do."

Opelika (4-1) opened the scoring on a Matthew Christian to James Moss 26-yard touchdown play down the left sideline to cap a five-play, 55-yard drive.

Late in the first quarter, Central came right back to score on a Zion Webb 11-yard touchdown pass to Samuel. With 9:55 left in the second quarter, Webb found Ethan Baber on a 34-yard touchdown play to give Central a 13-7. "Zion has been a playmaker all year, if his number is called he makes plays," added Dubose. "Tonight he didn't play like a sophomore, he played like an upperclassman. He is a smart kid that listens and picks things up." Webb finished the game completing 12-of-21 passing for 148 and two touchdowns along with 44 tough yards on 15 carries.

With 2:42 left before the half, Josh Johnson had a 16-yard touchdown run right up the middle of the Red Devils defense for the score and the Bulldogs take a 14-13 halftime lead. "Two great teams going at it and in the end, they made one more play than we did," said Bulldogs head coach Brian Blackmon. "Central has a great football team and I believe we have a great football team. I'm proud of our kids, we played well enough to win. I love our football team, this is a great football team."

Right out of the game after halftime, Opelika grabbed the lead right back as Johnson went 21-yards for a Bulldogs touchdown. Johnson finished the night with 120 yards on 21 carries and two touchdowns. Opelika takes a 21-13 lead early in the second half.

With 11:08 left in the game, Central had a big drive to get back into the game with a 12-play, 72-yard drive, that Webb took the direct snap and scored from 12-yards out to cut the Bulldogs lead to a single point.

Both defenses locked down in the fourth quarter, until the last scoring drive by the Red Devils to get the win. The win gave Central its first 6-0 start since 2010, but in week 7 Central lost to Auburn High. The Red Devils finished the year 9-2 and lost in the first round of the playoffs."We fought back and I'm proud of our football team," said Red Devils linebacker Morten. "We might have to do this in the playoffs and the state championship, doesn't matter how far we are down, were going to find a way to get it done."
