HOOVER, Alabama -- In the National Select 7-on7, a Bucs defensive stop with seconds left in the game carried Hoover past Oxford (Miss.) 24-23. In the first pool play game of the day for Hoover, the Bucs down a point forced an Oxford turnover on downs for two points and the win with :06 seconds left in the game.
The Bucs (1-0) down 6-0 scored on a Malcolm Holifiled touchdown reception from Jack Hutcheson to tie the game at 6-6. Oxford came back to take a 12-6 lead but Hoover tied the game again when Hutcheson found Chris Parker for a 29-yard touchdown pass. The one point conversion was missed again for a 12-12 tie. "On offense, we have to get a little bit crisper on our routes," said Bucs Head coach Josh Niblett. "On defense, we need to know where the sticks are but I like the way were out here trying to play physical. Trying to use our hands. Offense made a big play to get us back in the game and the defense gave us the stop to win the game. That is what I am waiting to see us complement each other on both sides of the ball."
With :53 seconds left in the game, Oxford quarterback Jack Abraham found DK Metcalf on a 3 yard touchdown. Oxford led 23-16 late in the game. Hoover scored again when Hutcheson found Bradrick Shaw open on a 5-yard touchdown pass. Oxford led 23-22, but the Bucs defense prevailed in the end.
