 Shades Valley at Clay-Chalkville | Friday - October 10, 2014 | Region 6 Game
RB #12 Terelle West, Clay-Chalkville

It just doesn't get better than this during the regular season on a Friday night in the state of Alabama. #2 Shades Valley travels to #1 Clay-Chalkville for a  Class 6A, Region 6 epic contest. The winner of this game will be our #1 team in Class 6A going into next week and will have the inside lead for the #1 seed in the region.

Shades Valley comes into this game with a couple of big wins on the resume. Wins over Florence (37-35), Acadiana, La. (39-21), and Gardendale (42-35). "We are starting to gel as a team," said Mounties head coach Bill Smith. "We have grown close as a team and I have seen regular improvement since the first week of the season."

A couple of reasons for the teams success has been the play of the offense. The offensive line will be key battle against the Clay-Chalkville defensive front. "We have to be able to run the football," added Smith. "We have made a lot of progress in our offensive line since the Florence game. They have been the biggest improvement to our team. I'm very proud of the way that they have played." Upfront are senior Brandon Anderson 6-3/285 and junior Jamie Allen 6-3/335 anchor the offensive line. Center Ryan Lacey makes the calls for Mounties offensive line.

Weapons, Shades Valley has them. Quarterback RaShad Louie leads the Mounties offense that can score from any anywhere on the field. The three-year starter has missed only two games since starting his sophomore season and his head coach has a lot of confidence in his quarterback. "RaShad has played extremely well," said Smith. "He has played in so many big games now. He does a great job of reading the defense." For the season, Louie has completed 65-of-105 for 1,109 yards with 11 TD's and only one interception. Also, Louie can score on the run. The senior has 626 yards on 65 carries for a whopping 9.6 yard per touch on the ground.

The other play maker for the Mounties is running back/wide receiver Keith Mixon. The Mississippi State commitment can run a 4.35 in the 40 that can blow you away with his speed or he can change direction to miss an on coming tackle from an opponent. Mixon can turn a screen pass, go deep or get a carry behind the line of scrimmage for a touchdown anytime he touches the ball. "I wouldn't trade him for any player in the state," Smith said. "He has great vision, acceleration, and the ability to change directions. For his size of 177 pounds, he is very powerful and strong. He has extremely good hands and I look for some more big offers to come his way."

For the season, Mixon has 576 yards on 52 rushes and 7 TD's. He averages an incredible 11.1 yard a carry. A first down everytime he touches it on the ground. In the air, he has 579 yards on 31 receptions and 7 TD's. Mixon has sit out three halves so far this season and really could have some incredible numbers.

For the Mounties defense, it all starts up front with defensive tackle Daron Payne. The 6-3/320 senior has the size and speed to give fits to any offensive lineman. Every SEC team would like to see him at their school while his head coach thinks he is the best in the country at his position.

At linebacker, Vanntre'l Wilkerson Price and Lil'maine Patterson look to slow down the Cougars run game. In the secondary, Clifford Toney and TeQuan Goliday are solid in the Mounties secondary.

For Clay-Chalkville, the Cougars have wins over Niceville, Fl. (44-23), Pinson Valley (45-35) and Tuscaloosa-Hillcrest (48-26). "I am very proud of our kids," said Cougars head coach Jerry Hood. "I believe we are progressing well through the season so far, our kids are really working hard to get better week to week." The Cougars offense is averaging 49.6 points per game while giving up 19.5 points per game.

On offense they have many weapons. Tyrell Pigrome stirs the Cougars on offense. With his style of play, he can hit you on a big play anytime. "Tyrell has played really good this season," added Hood. "All we ask from our quarterbacks is to not to turn the ball over. He does a great job of reading coverages and he has made the throws on the field." For the season, Pigrome has completed 59-of-89 passing for 1,071 yards & 16 TD's. On the ground, the QB has 607 yards on 58 carries for a hugh 10.5 yards per rush with 10 touchdowns.

At receiver, T.J. Simmons (15-372 & 8 TD's), sophomore Nico Collins (12-248 & 6 TD's) and Eric Blockum (9-159), can go and get it. These big play receivers are a big part of the Cougars offense. At running back, the Cougars have one of the best in the state. Terelle West can run it or catch it and turn it into six points. His speed and quickness give opponents fits trying to tackle him. West is the Cougars leading rusher. The senior had 638 yards on 80 carries for an 8.0 average and 7 TD's. Also, he adds 176 yards on 16 receptions & 2 TD's.

This season, the Cougars defense have a lot of takaways. Defensive back Izzy Bennett had two picks against Center Point last week. Also, Kam Prewitt has some picks this season. The Cougars defense seems to be on a good note as they held Center Point to very little offense last week. Kendell Jones anchors the Cougars defensive front.

The Cougars could hold the advantage in special teams. Even though Mixon & Prewitt return punts for their teams, the Cougars have Art Smith that has blocked three kicks this season. Kicker Patrick Millican is 34-of-37 in extra points and 6-of-9 in field goals for Clay-Chalkville. "He really want to pressure the punter," said Hood. "He work hard on special teams and know if we can get one, the odds are in our favor to score on that possession."

It has been seven weeks for this game to get here. Both of these two teams are very balanced on offense. We will see if special teams make the difference in this big game.
