 Clay-Chalkville 25, Oxford 16 - September 7, 2012 (Region 7 Game)
Clay-Chalkville #8 QB Hayden Moore

The Clay-Chalkville Cougars turned a second half turnover to turn away the Oxford Yellow Jackets 25-16 Friday night at Lamar Field in Oxford, Alabama. Oxford trailing 16-7 at halftime turned the momentum around on a Yellow Jacket touchdown and cut the Cougars lead to 16-14 heading late in the third quarter. With 1:52 left in the third quarter, defensive back Tre Hrabowski picked off an Oxford pass and the Cougars drove 70-yards and scored a touchdown at the 7:22 mark in the fourth quarter to seal the Cougars win.

The Cougars led throughout the game but the Yellow Jackets made a second half run to keep the game close. "We played a great football team tonight in Oxford." said Cougars Head coach Jerry Hood. "No one is going to want to play Oxford after week 10. I'm proud of our team playing on the road. Defensively, we know we are pretty good. Offensively, when we had to do it, we went right down the field, took six minutes off the clock. Were able to pull a four minute drive our next time with the ball. Thats good stuff."

The game started very well for Clay-Chalkville. Brian Clark took a screen pass from quarterback Hayden Moore and went 73-yards for a touchdown on the first play of the game. "I knew when they called the play, I thought to myself touchdown," said Cougars wide receiver Clark. "This is a good win for us on the road, but we still have to move forward and work hard." Robert Greene kicked the extra point and the Cougars led 7-0.

The Cougars scored again in the first quarter when Terrell West ran 22-yards for a touchdown up the middle on the Yellow Jacket defense. Two key plays on this drive was a 10-yard pass to DeAndre Woods and a 12-yard pass to Kendrick Smith. The kick failed and Clay-Chalkville leads 13-0 after the first quarter.

The Yellow Jackets scored with 5:09 in the second quarter on a little trickery by Oxford when quarterback William Webber pitched to Racean Thomas who threw to a wide open Jarrius Orr for a 37-yard touchdown play. The Yellow Jackets received a short punt from the Cougars and on the first play of the drive, the Yellow Jackets found the end zone. Joseph Mcguire kicked the extra point to cut the Clay-Chalkville lead to 13-7.

The Cougars responded right before the half on a short kickoff by Oxford when Greene kicked a 27-yard field goal as time expired in the first half. The Cougars started the drive on the Oxford 47 and took only a few plays to kick the field goal.

In the second half, Oxford changed the momentum of the game in the third quarter when Thomas took the ball and went for a 6-yard touchdown run. A key play on this scoring drive was a 25-yard pass from Webber to receiver Terry Mason. Thomas had some key runs on that drive to move the Yellow Jackets down the field. Mcguire PAT made the score Clay-Chalkville 16-14.

The Cougars defense rose up and changed the momentum back to Clay-Chalkville with 1:52 in the third quarter, when Hrabowski picked off a Yellow Jackets pass and the offense drove the ball over six minutes to score a hugh touchdown on a West one-yard run. On the play before, Woods took a reverse from the six yard line to the one foot line. Another key play on that drive was a 9-yard run by Moore and a 22-yard pass from Moore to Woods. The PAT made the score 23-14 Clay-Chalkville and put the pressure back on the Yellow Jackets offense. "This was a hard fought game by two good teams," said Yellow Jackets Head coach John Grass. "We just didn't make enough plays tonight. We have to hang in there and get better."

In the last two minutes of the game, Clay-Chalkville took a safety and the Cougars received a safety on a snap out of the end zone by Oxford for the final 25-16. Hrabowski picked off a pass in the final seconds of the game to close out the game.

The Clay-Chalkville defense did a great job holding the Yellow Jackets Thomas to only 36 rushing yards on 16 carries. "The front four did a great job letting our linebackers make plays," said Cougars linebacker Hunter Patterson. "There number 6 (Thomas) is a great player and we had a great game plan for him and Oxford is a heck of a team. We came out ready and came out focus to play a great game." Thomas, the talented junior running back, is receiving a lot of looks at several SEC schools. Thomas can make a long run at anytime on the field but his longest run was seven yards on this night. "That was the key to the game," said Hood."Our entire game plan was to stop the run."

Moore completed 9-of-11 passing for 145 yards on the night. Clark was the leading receiver with three catches for 96 yards. West had 79 rushing yards on 12 carries.

Clay-Chalkville has two big road wins this season to start the season with one being a Region 7 victory tonight. "We have played two good football teams to start the season," added Hood. "We thought if we went one and one we would still be in good shape because we really think we will continue to improve each week."

Oxford's defense did a great job of putting pressure on the Cougars offense. The Yellow Jackets had 11 tackles behind the line of scimmage and had five sacks on the night and made it hard for the Cougars to get deep with their speed with Clark and Woods in this game.
