It sounds like Auburn Head Coach Gus Malzahn found his man in the secondary for the 2017 recruiting class. DB Malcolm Askew (McAdory) from McCalla, Alabama verbally commits to Auburn during Big Cat Weekend.

"This was just a spur of the moment type deal, just being in Auburn the whole week being around the football staff, players, students it was such a great environment and I knew this was the place I wanted to be," said Askew. "I really thought going into this weekend that I was going to make a decision around September or October and I just decided to change my mind and make the commitment to Coach Malzahn."

There are a lot of recruiting sites that have Askew ranked all over the board. Forget how many stars that are beside his name. He is a football player! This is a football player that Auburn needed to get on defense. He is going to be on the field early and often for the Tigers.

Askew had 54 offers coming in since his freshman year in high school. The University of Georgia was his first offer and back on May 22, 2016, Askew narrowed his list to 10 with Auburn being #1 on his Top 10 list. "I really want to be the leader of this class," added Askew. "The people really welcomed me. The coaches made me feel real important to the program. Auburn made me feel that I was the right guy to lead this recruiting class." Askew took a good number of trips to Auburn this past season before he made his final decision on Saturday.

Askew was excited the Auburn asked him to play both sides of the football. Malzahn, being an offensive guy, liked what he has seen at wide receiver in Askew. "Coach Malzahn knows what I can do when the ball is in my hands," said Askew. "On defense, they want me to play every position in the secondary and be that guy to cover the opposing teams best receiver."

During this spring though, Askew who played wide receiver on offense last season for the Yellow Jackets transitioned to quarterback this past spring. "This team has a lot of heart working hard in the weight room pushing ourselves," said Askew. "We will continue to grind each day and get better as a team, I think we will be a great team and surprise some teams in the fall."

McAdory Head Coach David Powell gives high praises to his senior quarterback. "He is a team leader, a great player for us," said Powell. "He has been a varsity player for us for four years now. Malcolm had a great spring at quarterback, he is such a great athlete and it is exciting to just see him play."

The Yellow Jackets have some great talent on both sides of the football. On offense, WR Willie Langham is a huge target for the new quarterback this season. "Willie can go get the ball, great length to him," added Powell. "Great player for us that plays both ways on offense and defense." Askew has some high praise for his receiver. "Willie is long and has a great frame that can attack the football. I look for his offers to go up real soon."

The McAdory running game is in good hands with Phillip Brown. "Big time running back for us. Real powerful and strong," added Powell. "Very hard worker. Looking forward to see him this fall."

The Yellow Jackets need WIll Campbell and Shelton Dolby to take the lead for the new offensive line that had to replace all five starters from a year ago.
