 Vestavia Hills 17, Mountain Brook 14 Final 2 OT's | Friday, October 7, 2016 | Class 7A, Region 3 Game

VESTAVIA HILLS, Alabama -- The Vestavia Hills defense and special teams put it all together tonight for a 17-14 two overtime win over #7 Mountain Brook in a big Class 7A, Region 3 win. With the Rebels win tonight in region play, the Spartans loss gives the Hoover Bucs the region championship tonight.

With both teams scoring and kicking the extra points in the first overtime, Mountain Brook on a third and 13 play, Rebels linebacker Earl Bradberry picked off the Spartans pass to give the Rebels a chance to win the game. After two runs down to the 2-yard line, the Rebels decided to kick a field goal on 3rd down. After a perfect snap and hold, kicker Manraj Singh kicked the game winning 18-yard field goal and put the Vestavia Hills sidelines and fans into a frenzy. 

"This was overall a great victory," said Rebels Head coach Buddy Anderson. "I'm so proud of our kids. We played this game one play at a time and we wouldn't be denied. Defense played great tonight. The kicking game was huge with field position, the blocked field goal, the blocked punt and getting the field goal at the end of the game."

Mountain Brook (5-2, 3-2) scored first in the game when Harold Joiner scored on a 2-yard touchdown run for the Spartans with 9:18 left in the second quarter. The Spartans took a 7-0 lead. With 2:46 left in the half, the Rebels linebacker Bradberry blocked a Spartans punt and Jonathan Hess picked it up and ran 15-yards for the Rebels special team touchdown. With the score, Vestavia Hills tied the score at 7-7 going into halftime. "Coach Anderson told us this week, play this game one play at a time," said safety Tucker Queen. "This gives us a lot of confidence going forward and keep this chemistry going on our team. We played together. We are having fun and we are playing great football. This was awesome tonight."

In the second half, both teams were scoreless and the teams traded punts for the entire second half. Both teams had chances to score in the second half, but couldn't get it into the end zone. "This win gives us momentum," said Rebels defensive tackle Walter Thomas. "We have a big game next week and taking these games one week at a time. We have to keep it going and play like this every Friday night."

In overtime, Vestavia Hills (4-3, 2-3) running back Daniel Tolliver scored on a 4-yard run to give the Rebels the 14-7 lead but Hamp Sisson scored on a 10-yard touchdown run to tie the score at 14-14. 

Coleman Petway completed 9-of-15 passing for 132 yards with 16 carries for 29 yards in the game. Mitchell Langley had three receptions for 61 yards on the night. The Rebels defense held Mountain Brook to 201 total yards.

Next week Mountain Brook travel to Oak Mountain at Heardmont Park while Vestavia Hills takes on Hoover at the Hoover Met.
